Flying today sucks. It’s like taking a Greyhound bus with wings. Once flying became affordable for the masses the lowest dregs were able to drag down the experience.

Looks like Continental should have stayed in SkyTeam after all. Otherwise, Continental's predecessor should have kept just one airline without splitting United and Continental into two; imo, SkyTeam is better than Star.

Continental Airlines were a good airline back then. Now, it seems that tradition was lost after the merger with United.

I was working at a major U.S. airline during the 1990’s, and it was amazing to watch Continental’s turnaround. In the early 1990’s, our misconnected business passengers refused to transfer to Continental (unless there was no other choice), to gladly accepting transport on Continental, to our airline losing business class passengers outright to Continental by the year 2000. Continental’s management team literally wanted to run an airline; not just maximize investor revenue; and man did they get it right. Their service was amazing, and their employees were proud of their jobs and the company they worked for, and it really showed. Even as a passenger in coach, you felt like Continental was glad you were there flying with them, and they treated you really well.

I did not just hear that! Who is the Whatever, Lady? She was NOT JUST A Stewardess! I thing I was in the cargo hold of the 1987 Contenintal airlines flight that crash. That's maybe where I was seated. Did I know my cousin Leon SCOFIELD The pilot, if he was the Pilot of this plane crash because they changed the names of everyone or not? Were they all employees or family of employees of Continental Airline's Staff ? I don't know why I'm thinking strange words that came later in life or something

United Airlines is the worst thing that ever happened to Continental and the traveling public.

For those that say United still has all the Continental branding, that's not really true anymore. A key element of Continental's branding that has been there since 1992, regardless of whatever new business class seat or direcTV system they introduce, was Continental's two-tone blue cabin. Sidewalls, other walls, and tray tables are light blue while seats are dark blue. Sure, United still uses dark blue seats, but they got rid of the blue tray tables and walls in favor of mostly white walls and tray tables. Bulkheads have a dark blue bottom half and bulkheads at the front of premium cabins have a gray top half, but unless you sit in a bulkhead row, the blue bottom half is not very visible and the gray top half is only at the center bulkheas for widebodies while the side bulkheads in Polaris cabins have a white top half.

For those that say United's problems come from Continental management, let me make an analogy. American Airlines has been run by US Airways management since 2015. While under US Airways management, American Airlines has seen cancellations of Airbus A350 orders, the retirement of Airbus A330s, and orders for more Boeing 787s. Does that mean US Airways favored Boeing widebodies over Airbus widebodies? No, the reason why US Airways management decided to use Boeing widebodies is because of contracts inherited from AA. Same thing at United, Continental management had to inherit policies and contracts from United, the only things inherited from Continental were management and branding. Therefore, saying that Continental was worse than United is like saying that US Airways preferred Boeing widebodies.

Hundred of scab pilots at Continental during this era. They’d do anything for Frank Lorenzo and worked for peanuts. That’s why they felt they needed to hit the pilot’s union.

It was a game of Musical Chairs that forced the decision for Continental to go with United. Delta had already merged with Northwest, and American had merged with US Airways. The writing was not only on the wall, but there was only a 6% overlap redundancy in the two airline's route structure, which was phenomenal. The United name and signage were better known worldwide, but Continental's service was superior by far. It was hard to swallow the United name for the Continental folks at the time of the merger (2010). The attitude at CAL was sunny and positive and get the job done right; UAL's attitude was to cancel as many flights as possible and head for the hotel -- who cares about the paying customers? That is not every UAL employee, but too many of them. That attitude would NEVER have been tolerated at CAL -- by the employees! If you've ever merged with a bad-attitude group, it's always a matter of if you will raise them up or will they bring you down. The years following the merger were filled with that struggle. I hope it's been resolved by now.

New York Air was a fine airline. Frank's big error in not keeping it separate. AND in buying Eastern.

I worked for America West during the early 2000's in Phoenix...at the time I believe Continental owned a large part of our airline and we had a very extensive codeshare, even used the same reservations system: SHARES. CO was on SHARES-A and we (HP) were on SHARES-B. We also did their ground-handling in PHX...it was a separate bid and those who did it wore CO uniforms to work their gates and ticket counter; at the time CO had no passenger service people in PHX--we did all of it (we did BA's, also). I always marvelled at how well-run CO was and how nice their product was.

Lorenzo, along with Icahn were the IDIOT CLASS of Airline CEOs. Both of which couldn't even navigate out of paper sack.

In 1987 I flew Continental from Austin to LAX for $49 each way, complete with an in-flight meal.

OMG I remember this day, with Hollis Harris........I really like Hollis Harris, he was a great CEO However Frank Lorenzo fired him shortly after, but the new image was one to be proud of. Once Frank was Gone - Gordon came-in and really made Continental Airlines everything we were until the merger.

Great job. I worked in Cleveland at Chelsea for 2.5 years. I there for the Chelsea startup in 1991. I recognized two of the people. I assume that you worked for Continental?

I worked for Continental Airlines for twenty years. Ten or so of those years was with Gordon as Chairman and CEO. Once Gordon left the company it an end to a great era and the downfall of Contintal. The merger was a joke. Those at the top if both airlines made alot of money while destroying the hard working people at the bottom. I am so happy that I left before the meger.
